If you see a lime green and purple runner in Dauphin, you may want to consider offering her some support.
Desiree Rantala is Running for Fiji, which means she is aiming to run 11,000 km, the distance from Canada to Fiji, raising funds and awareness of the need for affordable housing, along the way.
The Dauphinite is part of a Habitat for Humanity Global Village Canada team traveling to Nadi, Fiji, to build a house, Nov. 12 to 28.
Rantala must raise $5,000 to get there.
“So I can build a home for one deserving family,” she said, adding the mission for Habitat for Humanity is to provide a hand up, and not a hand out.
The young entrepreneur is aware she can not do it alone and is asking the community to support her with a financial donation, or by running with or for her.
“So I’m not only looking for sponsors for donations from the community, but I’m also wanting the community to get involved,” Rantala said, adding she has hope local businesses will challenge each other and be part of the active living initiative.
“And I think together, by November, we can run 11,000 kilometres.”
If 220 people ran 50 km, she calculated, they would reach the 11,000-km goal.
The goal of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing, one house at a time, by working with a family to help them build a home and strengthen their community.
Global Village teams are eight to 20 volunteers, led by one or two experienced volunteers who are trained and supported by the Global Village staff.
A recent member on the board for the Habitat for Humanity Dauphin Chapter, Rantala is excited to represent Dauphin globally and locally.
“To get to Fiji, it’s going to take an army and that’s what Habitat for Humanity is all about. It’s never an initiative that’s about one person, it’s about a bunch of people coming together and working together to make something happen,” she said.
Aside from financial support, Rantala will accept donations of health products, travel products and athletic wear.
