Battle for the Belts a success

Jarrett Newton and Chad Jones combined to shoot a 62 to win the first-ever Parkland Source for Sports Battle for the Belts, Sunday at the Gilbert Plains Country Club.
The duo finished three shots ahead of runners-up Chad Facey and Shawn McQuarrie. Kevin Millar and Jay Thiesen were third after shooting a 66.
Anthony Wiens and Rob Bouchard teamed up to win the first flight, finishing with a 69. A countback put Stan Mancheese and Gordon McKay in second spot ahead of Jason Shaw and Dan Keeping after both teams carded a 71.
In the second flight, a countback gave Dean Murray and Bob Murray first place over runners-up Grant Edgar and Danny Edgar, while Gloria Carmichael and Corbin Pasternak were third. All three teams shot a 73.
In the third flight, three teams tied at 75. A countback put Ron Chartrand and Herman Spence in first place, with Dave Sigvaldason and Owen Sigvaldason in second and Clayton Carefoot and Tyler Esau in third.
Another countback resulted in Brett Ewanyshyn and Travis Mouck winning the fourth flight, with a 77.
Troy Caruk and Shawn Caruk were second on a countback over Bob Gilroy and Kevin Hockridge after they each finished with a 78.
Kevin Lynch and Vern Ellis teamed up to win the fifth flight, shooting an 83. A countback gave second place to Richard Genaille and Cameron Campbell, while Paul Lewicki and Bev Lewicki were third. Those two teams finished with an 84.
Newton also won the closest-to-the-hole contest on no. nine, while Owen Sigvaldason won on no. 14. Todd Gardipie won on no. 4 and Eric Prokopowich won on no. 17.
The sold-out tournament featured a full field of 72 teams.
