Hemp industry will evolve slowly, says PIHG chair

With the upcoming legalization of cannabis in October, local hemp growers will see some changes to their industry. But Chris Dzisiak, Parkland Industrial Hemp Growers (PIHG) co-op chair, does not think a new market will emerge quickly.
He explained legislation changes will allow hemp growers to harvest, process and work with green leaf material, which is currently not allowed.
That green leaf material, the top of the hemp plant, contains CBD (cannabidiol), and under current legislation, Canadian producers may only harvest the seed or fibre of a plant.
“CBD is another medical component of marijuana, THC is another cannabinoid,” Dzisiak said, noting CBD from hemp does not have any psychotropic effects as THC does.
