Chamber plans candidate forums

Dauphin and District Chamber of Commerce (DDCC) is hosting two candidate forums prior to the upcoming municipal election, Oct. 24.
“We’re doing two. One for the RM of Dauphin and one for the city,” explained DDCC executive director Stephen Chychota.
The forum for candidates running in the RM of Dauphin election is set for Oct. 10, and the City of Dauphin candidate forum is scheduled for Oct. 16.
Both forums will be at the Lion’s Den in the Parkland Recreation Complex. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the event begins at 7:30 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend, Chychota said, noting there is no charge at the door.
“We’re doing this, because we want the opportunity to hear from the candidates and get an interaction between them and the residents and the business community. And have a better opportunity to know who we have the option to elect, as our municipal leaders for the area,” he explained.
The chamber is asking the public for questions directed to the candidates now, Chychota said, noting anyone with a question, may submit it to the chamber office.
Chamber members will also take questions at the event, he added, prior to it starting.
“And we will go through them as best we can, to make sure that we can get enough topics covered,” Chychota said.
“But there is no open mic, it’s all submitted questions prior to the event. It’s something that we’ve done in the past and it seems to work pretty well.”
There will be opening speeches where each candidate will have the opportunity to present a two-minute speech.
A question period will follow, then each candidate will make a closing statement.
This is the first candidate forum DDCC has done one for the RM of Dauphin, he noted.
“So because we are Dauphin and District, we have a responsibility to the region and we should be hosting an event like this to have the same benefit for the people of the rural municipality,” Chychota added.
There may be other candidate forums in the Parkland, he said, as DDCC is currently working to developing them with partners.
“You know there are a lot of a lot of candidates this year, so lots to go over and lots to see. So I could imagine again, a big turnout to catch all the platforms from all the candidates,” Chychota said.
