Mavericks return to rugby pitch after long absence

For the first time in 15 years, a senior men’s rugby game was held in Dauphin.
The Parkland Mavericks recruited some Brandon Barbarians to host the Regina Highlanders at Kin Field at the Vermillion Park Sportsplex, Saturday afternoon.
And although they lost, 26-0, there was no mistaking the enthusiasm of the local players following the game.
“It was pretty good. It was pretty good to be strapping the cleats on as a Maverick again,” said Dauphin player-coach Rod Carberry.
“We’re so happy that Regina was able to commit to this day for us. We don’t really care what the outcome was. To be able to get on the pitch again and play another team, it’s a win for us.”
Carberry was pleased with how the team played, considering it was thrown together with several players from Brandon.
“We were kind of a throw-together group of guys and figured the system out in the second half and we were able to play some rugby,” Carberry said.
The Mavericks were awarded a DHL host game match, so they are looking for a team to travel to Dauphin for a game, June 2.
