Ushkowski commits to Bobcats

A woman’s rugby undertaking at Brandon University (BU) is looking to a Dauphin player to help build the program.
Karlee Ushkowski will be attending BU and will suit up for the Bobcats club team.
“As I got into Brandon University, the coach Brian Yon, texted me and asked me if I wanted to play rugby for their local team there,” she said.
The women’s rugby program at BU started in 2018 as a 7s club team. It does not compete in USports or Canada West.
Being a new program is what attracted Ushkowski to it.
“He was saying how they just started and they’re still trying to build the team to make it a higher level, because right now it’s just a club team,” she said, adding they usually play four to six games against other club teams.
Ushkowski played four years with the Dauphin Clippers and she also represented Manitoba on provincial teams for a couple of years.
That experience, she feels, helped her land a spot with the Bobcats.
“Playing for four years with the high school team, I built on so many skills,” Ushkowski said, adding she is looking forward to getting back on the pitch.
“It’s been over a year since we played our last game,” she pointed out.
With the provincial team, Ushkowski played in tournaments in Vancouver in 2018 and 2019. Later in 2019, she played with Team Manitoba at the Tropicals 7s tournament.
“The games went by so fast. The other teams had greater skills, but then we got to gain our skills and work as a team,” she said.
